I See You, Ricky

I see him very often at the corner on my way to work.

He reminds me of my dad in a lot of ways. The way he walks. His stance. Sure, my dad isn't a Black man with an eye patch, but he gives me the same vibes.

I don't really know his story, but I see him often, and I pray for him every time I do. He always waves and carries the same sign.

I don't typically give people things when I see them holding signs that say, "Please help..." Most of the time, I think the same thing many people think. They're just going to use the money to buy drugs or alcohol, or they're begging because they're too lazy to get a job. I even once saw a man begging on a corner walk over to his very nice car after collecting a few bucks.

So naturally, I'm skeptical of everyone.

But this man is different.

Today, I had some cash, and I could afford to give him some. I've seen him for almost a whole year, and I hardly ever have real cash on hand. Today, I saw him start walking up the incline of the exit ramp, and my heart really jumped and said, Give him something.

I didn't think he would make it to my car before the light turned green, but he did.

I rolled down my window, held out a $20 bill, and asked, "What's your name?"

He said, "Ricky."

We briefly squeezed hands.

I said, "Hi Ricky, I'm Heather, and I just wanted to let you know I see you..."

The light turned before I could finish my thought, which was really just, I see you out here all the time.

He smiled and said, "God bless you."

And I replied, "God bless you too, Ricky."

As I pulled away, I prayed.

"God, please do bless Ricky."

I did nothing special, and yet my heart still aches for him. I want to put him in my car and take him to breakfast. I want to bring him a bagged lunch every day.

As I made the last few minutes of my drive to work and pulled into the parking lot, I prayed again.

"God, thank You for Ricky and for reminding me how much work we still have to do to help those in need."

I might have also said, "Even if Ricky uses my gift for drugs or alcohol, please still bless him."

Maybe it wasn't that eloquent, but it was what was in my heart.

How do we show up for those in need?

I fail most of the time.

I think about Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan and how often I am the passerby who keeps walking, avoiding those who need help.

We live in a world filled with social injustices and economic inequalities, and I'm still learning what it means to roll down the window and give something to a stranger who may or may not deserve what I have to give.

But then I think about it through the correct lens.

Jesus rolled the window down for me.

So thank you, Ricky, for reminding me who I am called to be.

On a mission

13 years ago... My husband and I were in the process of becoming overseas missionaries.  We were pretty far along in the process, approved by our mission agency, blessed by our elders, and waiting the call from missionaries in Latin America. We knew we had many things to overcome to make it a reality but we were willing and able.  We never thought God was going to shut the door as far as he opened it. Spring of 2006 - was the worst season of our lives.  When we heard the word "cancer" we crumbled.  We didn't know what to expect but we also found out we were "expecting." Between having a baby, termites, job loss and cancer - we closed the door in great great sadness. God used us in some pretty amazing ways but there has also been a small void in my life wondering what it would been like to serve him in the field.  Almost every day of my life, I keep asking God ... "What am I supposed to be doing?" Why does it feel like I'm fail...

Gesso

As an occasional painter, I've been known to take an old painting and paint over it. There's a product called white gesso and it's purpose is to prime a canvas for oil painting and pre-prime and old paintings to be used again. It hides all the color that is under it but it doesnt hide the texture or previous strokes. Often times in life we have to somewhat start all over again.  Perhaps it's restarting after a bad relationship, or a medical procedure that had left you different than before, or a job or career that hasn't really fulfilled you.  Most of the time we find ourselves wanting to cover up a major mistake. Sometimes we wish life had a gesso option.  Something that could cover up everything that was there before.  A new start... As for me, I know it's my sinful heart that longs for the whiteness and freshness of a new clean canvas.  One thing that often gives me great comfort is... Jesus is my gesso.  He paid for my sins and his life ma...

Dead plants

At work lately, I've been feeling like that dead office plant.  You know the one in the corner that is all wilted and dried up. It's way too easy to feel malnurished  and deflated.  For a plant it's the lack of water and sunshine, for people it's the lack of encouragement and motivation. I love buying plants.  I love when they are so full and green.  However I'm not great at keeping them that way.  I recently read a check list on how to grow healthy plants. 1. Know you plants. 2. Make sure the containers or pots are big enough. 3. Provide the right amount of sunshine. 4. Water them only as often as needed. 5. Fertilze. 6. Check your plants often. 7. Keep pest away. Much of that is applied as being a manager... 1. Know your employees. 2. Make sure they are in positions they like and which allow them to grow and flourish. 3.  Encourage and motivate them. 4.  Give them constructive feedback. 5.  Pay them. 6....
